The Wonder Valley lies adjacent to Joshua Tree National Park, the Cleghorn Lakes Wilderness, and the Sheephole Valley Wilderness, and also the Twenty-nine Palms Marine Corps Base. Many have RVs parked outside, which are actually the inhabited spaces, while the cabins next to them remain empty and dilapidated shells.Īn assortment of 1950s appliances, aerodynamic refrigerators, and other home-detritus neatly arrayed in the yard Today those cabins are weathered, rustic, and/or dilapidated, mostly empty and abandoned and full of junk. The homes that are inhabited often seem like mix of desert oases and salvage yards: a combination of well watered palm trees, and old cars, refrigerators, salvaged lumber, and other odds and ends. Population densities are low, but it’s clear from the detritus scattered around the desert valley that it experienced a boom in the 1950’s, with many cabins built for vacationers from the city, full of the ‘modern’ amenities of the 50’s, including big aerodynamic refrigerators designed like Cadillacs. Beautiful in somehow both being empty and full all at once.
